The question of what I get in compensation for my time, talent, energy, and resources is a familiar one. We tend to look at what we do in relationship to what we get out of it.
So, how does church membership answer the question of why be an official member of the church?
We hear in Ephesians 1:11-12:
"In him (Jesus) we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory."
So, we have “an inheritance” in Christ Jesus as members of His body the church. This is not up to us it is “by the purpose of Him who works all things according to His will,”
This is not dependent on being a member of Aberdeen Presbyterian Church. It is only dependent on hearing the word of truth, the salvation message, believing, and giving one’s life to Christ.
However, we are more when we are committed to Christ and one another. So, salvation is ours. The inheritance is “guaranteed by the Spirit,” as is shared a few verses later.
Still, this is just the beginning. We are called to be a part of the body of Christ. We are called to commit ourselves not only to Christ but commit ourselves to be in loving relationship with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
In so doing we join with the children of God here gathered “so that, we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.”
This is why it makes a difference: In making a commitment to the church, we are making a commitment to Christ to participate with other brothers and sisters in worshiping and praising God to His glory.
