Jesus (and the Gospels) in 3D - Soup & Study Fall 2023

It’s sometimes easy to read the gospels—the stories about Jesus—without really thinking about what’s going on in the background. We read about Jesus and the disciples eating together, but what did Jewish people in the first century eat? We read about Jesus traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem—but how far was that and how did they travel? And where was Jericho? We read about the Pharisees, and the Sadducees, and the Zealots; who were they, and what made them one and not the other? These are just a few of the cultural background issues we’ll be talking about in Jesus (and the Gospels) in 3D. When we know something about the cultural context of Jesus’ life and ministry all of a sudden our reading of the gospels sort of snaps into 3D. We begin to see—and understand—the gospel stories differently. The stories make sense in new ways. And that’s what Jesus (and the Gospels) in 3D is about!
